My dear friend Linda, I don’t ever remember not knowing her. As young girls
we played with toy horses and pretended that we were horses. We helped twist one
another around on the swing until we were nearly sick from spinning. And we
climbed the young trees that were near the parsonage sidewalk to pretend we were
a bird family and to share confidences, quite sure no one knew we were there. We
played at each other’s homes and at the church. I remember once being scolded
from the pulpit, as we were in one of the front rows, probably for giggling and
having too much fun and obviously not listening during the sermon.
As young women we shared confidences without having to climb trees. We shared
about boyfriends, our futures, views of the world and what was going on in it,
and our concerns about our growth in faith.
Linda was the kind of friend who, even when we’d not spoken to or seen one
another in weeks, months, or even years, when we did speak or get together it
was as if we’d just been with one another the previous day. Over the years we
shared joys, tears, prayers and laughter. It’s the laughter I remember the most.
I miss her.
In loving memory,
Christine
