Charles Armstrong

Charles W. Armstrong (Charlie, Chuck) passed away in his home in Clovis, California, on December 16, 2007, surrounded by family.

A graduate of the Dhahran Junior High School in 1961, returning student and later an employee of Aramco, he spent more than thirty years in Abqaiq and Dhahran. As a returning student, Charlie was known for his bleach-blond hair, dark tan, daringness off the diving board and for once having a sea turtle in his front yard swimming pool. He was an original "beach boy" and discovered his love for the ocean in Half Moon Bay.

Chuck, as he was known as an adult in Saudi, returned to Aramco as a biology teacher in 1979. After seven years in the classroom, he transferred to the Drilling and Training Department where he would spend the rest of his career. Chuck retired from Aramco in 1996 after 18 years of service.

Charles Armstrong

He was an educator and man of passion. A frequent guest speaker in Aramco schools, he shared his love for wildlife by bringing nature, i.e. scorpions, thubs, horned sand vipers, falcons, turkeys and even a green sea turtle, into the classroom.

Charlie was a Master SCUBA Instructor who, through his courses, dive trips and aquarium building taught many to enjoy the underwater world. He was an outdoorsman and was frequently called upon by the drilling community to take care of injured or exhausted birds of prey. He could often be found flying a Steppe Eagle or Falcon around the 3rd Street soccer field or over the Dhahran jebels.

He had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and the amazing ability to create "projects" in the most challenging of situations. He was a Leader, Entertainer, Teacher, Adventurer, Story-Teller and Family Man. He taught many and intrigued all; he is no longer with us but his stories live on.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Linda, sons Ryan and Brent, daughter-in-law Rieko, granddaughter Anna, sisters Diane Beresford, Lori Contreras, Becky Peabody, nieces and nephews. The family is collecting "Charlie Stories" for posterity and would love to hear from anyone whose life he touched.

I was sad to learn Charlie passed away. I will always remember being entertained by his spectacular diving at the DH pool. Whenever he was on the board, he had the entire crowd at the pool enthralled. Rest well, Charlie.

Chuck's name brings back some of the fondest memories of Aramco and the Kingdom. His humor, calm reassuring presence, knowledge of the animal kingdom, and willingness to share his dive expertise with the rankest of beginners was always appreciated. A lot can be said but the simple truth is he was one of the best the good guys I was fortunate enough to meet. Our sympathies go to Linda and the boys.  Our No "L" sign now gains a new, and sadder, memory to go with it each Christmas.

I am sad to hear of Chuck's passing. I learned a lot from Chuck and the camping trips we used to take together. I was the guy Chuck entrusetd with his old sea turtle shell. He said "You know Lash, I would love to take it back but I am afraid they would throw me under the jail if I tried to bring it into the US, so Lash its all yours". He also gave me a human skull too he had been keeping for years, he said he found out in the desert a long time ago. Both the turtel shell and the skull were donated to the Aramco Jr High Science Dept. He was a very friendly, generous and interesting guy who will be missed. As with most of my retired friends I loss track of Chuck, which is always due to my laziness. I am sure Chuck is in a better place now. So long old friend, I hope to join you someday.  Lashar

I'm really going to miss Chuck.  He was a kind person and loved to explore in Half Moon bay. He would catch the largest hamour and never tell anyone where he caught it. I'll never forget Chuck assisting in my rescue diver's course.  He was the most difficult person to rescue.  Chuck was always so kind to everyone and we will really miss you.

I am so sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. I have fond memories when he would take my son Ryan with Brent out to the desert and Ryan had wonderful stories about his adventures. He even brought home a very sweet kitten from the Bedouins. We all share those memories to this day, and I know they were vey special to Ryan.

A life so well lived just leaves such a void, and our hearts go out to you Linda, Brent and Ryan.  All the Blankenships have their memories of the Armstrongs from scuba and adventures with Chuck, Kevin's and Brent's antics, Linda and Bob working together and, of course, Cargo coming to live with us. We hold on to all of them and are thinking of you.

Mark and I are so sad to hear about Charlie.  Having recently lost David, we can understand how difficult this is for both you and the boys.  I still make the Linda Armstrong "MDFD Coffeecake" and when I do I think of you.  I'm sorry we have lost contact over the years but know we are thinking of you.  Barbara and Mark
