Emmanuel (Al) Yiannakakis Al Yiannakakis - 80th Birthday

At a great loss to our family, our father, Emmanuel (Manoli) Yiannakakis passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2008. His battle with emphysema is over and he is at peace.

He is survived by his loving wife, Vasiliki (Billie), and children, Amalia, Constantine, John, and Alexander, and grandson, Manoli.

He was born on the island of Crete, Greece in 1927. Manoli was brought up in Athens during WWII and came to the US for higher education receiving a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia.

While attending the University he met his wife, Billie, after seeing her in a Greek church in southern Illinois.

In 1957, he accepted a job with the Arabian American Oil Company in Saudi Arabia where he moved his family. They spent the next 27 years in a home on the Persian Gulf.

Saudi Arabia was a lovely place to raise his family, and he had a long and successful career.

Manoli was passionate about sailing, financial matters, politics, bridge, and food. He was a devoted father and husband who loved the affection of his wife and children and was proud of the family’s accomplishments and Greek heritage.

A viewing  will be on Sunday, March 2, from 6 to 8 pm along with the Trisagion (Blessing) at 7 pm.

The funeral will be held on Monday at 10 am.

Both services will take place at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on 1145 E. Fort Lowell, Tucson, Arizona 85719.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to The St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church New Building Fund in his memory.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to Adair Funeral Home-Avalon Chapel.

He was an extraordinary individual who grew up in Greece during World War II. He managed to get his engineering degree in the US after the war where he met my mother whose family had recently immigrated . He had a long and successful career with Saudi Aramco where he was able to enjoy his passion for sailing.

When he retired he divided his time between Greece and America. He was a devoted father and husband and will be missed by all of us.

We have GREAT memories of Al and all of the Yiannakakis.
We got hooked on the great Greek food and attend every Greek Festival around and always think of Al & all the Yiannakakis! The Luttrells wish the family well & we know as the wind blows that Al will always be there.

Although I never had the pleasure of working with Al, we shared a common interest in sailing.  His love of the sea and sailing was an important part of his life and he was very supportive to us Aramcon sailors in Saudi Arabia.  He will be sadly missed.  Temple and Beverly Page

    Rahman;
I have the pleasure to work with this Genius when I was 'fresh' at RT in 1977.
    A great gentleman.

Our very good friend, Manoli (Al), will be missed by all in the Pappas family.  We share many happy times and memories since 1957 in Ras Tanura and Dhahran, and during retirement at family get togethers at our respective homes, and often at the Ras Tanura beach where Manoli loved to sail his boats Amalia, Amalia II and give everybody rides.  Manoli was always upbeat about life and everything in general and made others feel good when in his company.  Manoli, “Thanks for calling George just a couple of weeks ago and just talking for a while”.  As he used to say at times, we shall see each other ‘upstairs’ some day.

Without a doubt the most enjoyable years we had in Arabia was when I was working with Al in Maintenance. The camaraderie that group enjoyed both on and off the job during those years cannot get any better. Even to this day I still quote some of Al’s famous sayings. My favorite one is, “he is permanently uniformed.”

ALZAHIR’S Are very saddened yet accepted ALLAH’S well to have chosen AL to eternally rest in peace “INSHALLAH”.  Kind, caring and very joyful. That’s how he will be remembered, especially by young ZAKI who writes, “ I could not wait to get to NAJMAH to go to the YIANNIKAKIS home. I loved BILLIE’s cakes and AL always made sure that I got plenty of. I was very young then and spoke very little English but, with AL all I needed is a simple nod ”. A gain, May ALLAH blesses his soul and provides his family with patience.
