Richard Crawford, Washington DC dentist and world traveler died unexpectedly on April 23, 2008. He was 57 years-old.
"Rick" was born in New York City and spent his formative years in Danbury Ct. In 1960 his family moved to Dhahran in Saudi Arabia for his father's work with Aramco. He graduated from the Perkiomen School in Pennsylvania followed by Northwestern and Northwestern Dental School. His experience in Saudi Arabia attracted him to return as a dentist at the Aramco Facility in Dhahran.
His ex-patriot lifestyle led him to develop strong international friendships and a love of travel. Rick became a storied and learned traveler. His travels took him to all parts of the globe. Among his favorite trips were skiing the Alps and the Rockies, regular visits to Europe, hiking Glacier National Park, traipsing around Turkish and Greek ruins, sailing the Caribbean, visiting Machu Pichu, snorkeling in Australia and climbing Kilimanjaro. Combined with his gregarious attitude, voracious reading and eclectic interests, Rick was the ideal dinner companion for interesting conversation.
A self-effacing person, Rick had a genuine interest in people. He also contributed time and treasure to the Food and Friend's mission in DC. Rick will be sorely missed for his compassionate and lively personality.
Rick was predeceased by his mother Kathryn. He is survived by his father Victor L. of Rapid City, Michigan, brothers Thomas R. of Bellevue, Washington and James V. of Tucson Arizona. He is also survived by his partner of eight years, Jim Ketterman of Arlington, VA. He is remembered by many friends and relatives who were touched by his life.
A viewing will be held from 3:00PM to 5:00PM on Wednesday, April 30 at the Murphy Funeral Home at 4510 Wilson Blvd., Arlington VA. There will be an opportunity to share remembrances at 4:00PM.
