Dave Thomas was part of a group that helped celebrate the 100th anniversary of the YMCA of the Rockies.
The founders of the Y hiked from Grand Lake, Colorado, 25 miles up and across the Continental Divide to Estes Park, Colorado where they found the perfect place to start the Conference and Resort Center. Dave is on the Board of Directors of the Association and wanted to be part of the “Founders Hike” so he trained for 10 months to get ready.
As the group approached the finish of the hike in Estes Park at the Y Camp, Church and museum bells tolled and people lined up to welcome back the hikers. The hike had started at 3AM in Grand Lake and finished around 5PM.
The Y “camp” is like a city as it has about 500 acres, 7 lodges, two concert halls, a program building, a stable, an indoor pool, dining halls and restaurants, mini golf, tennis, baseball fields, 200 plus cabins from rustic to vacation homes, hayrides, fly fishing, a post office, gift shop, etc. It is really a very large conference and resort center that sleeps 4500 a night, nestled in the beautiful Rocky Mountains and surrounded on three sides by the Rocky Mountain National Park.
