The 2008 Saudi Aramco Annuitant’s Reunion, Jabal Las Vegas, began on Monday, September 29th, at Paris Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Over 1,000 annuitants, expatriates, and brats registered to attend this year’s reunion. To date, this is the largest annuitant reunion gathering! The celebration, which takes place every two years, was especially noteworthy, as this year also marks the 75th Anniversary of Saudi Aramco.

The hosts for this year’s reunion were Al and Karen Fallon, who worked to wrangle volunteers, sponsors, and all arrangements so that the many attendees could spend plenty of time relaxing and enjoying the company of their Aramco pals.

Special events for the first day included a Duplicate Bridge tournament and Scavenger Hunt. “Gamers” that weren’t ready to hit the casinos just yet could also take part in games of Mah Jong, and the Simulated Sports Society also gathered for Vegas Bowl IV.

As annuitants mingled and greeted one another, they also had the opportunity to explore the Sidelines Suq and Saudi Aramco Heritage Gallery Exhibit in the Paris’ Champagne Ballroom. Luxurious sofa seating was also provided, courtesy American Furniture Rentals, so that annuitants could relax while catching up with old friends.

This year, the Sidelines Suq featured products created or collected by annuitants, many with elements of Arabian influence. A variety of Juana Johnson’s JJ Oasis collection featured camels, from specially printed camel sarongs from Bali to Christmas Camels, perfect for winter decorating and festivities.

Jo Watt’s handmade porcelain figures stood out as well, especially her angels. “I don’t use molds, so they’re all one of a kind,” Jo said. Each of them also has a unique face and name. “They all have their own personality too,” she said. Along with angels, Jo also sold wall reliefs, goblets, bowls and lamps. One of her pieces, “Shattered,” reflected how Jo felt when she was evacuated from Saudi Arabia during the Gulf War. “This reunion is the first time I’m seeing some of my Saudi Aramco friends in 18 years,” Jo said, emphasizing how much her seven years at Saudi Aramco meant to her, and still mean today.

Other suq booths included books, antique jewelry, rugs for charity, and photography. Annuitants could also learn more about financial advising from Reilly Financial Advisors, the 2009 Saudi Arabia Reunion, and, of course, logging on to Aramco ExPats.com.

At 6 PM, the Hofuf Gathering area was crowded as annuitants congregated for a pre-dinner Cocktail Reception and informal photos as they shared stories of the past and present experiences of Saudi Aramco. Seating for the Aramco Services Company sponsored Welcome Dinner began an hour later with welcoming remarks from ASC Associate General Counsel Brian Macbeth. He stated that the company is proud to help support these events, reminding attendees of the unique opportunity they had in working for a company like Saudi Aramco. He also spoke fondly of the day when he’ll be sitting in one of these seats as a retiree, saying, “I will welcome the event.”

Karen Fallon also took a moment to thank some of the reunion sponsors, and requested that all Old Timers—anyone with a badge number of two, three, four or five digits—stand up to remind us all that the legacy they began continues today.

The dinner was a delicious buffet with a wide assortment of vegetable dishes, and savory courses of beef or fish for the entrée. The dessert table was an elegant assortment of French pastries.

The special gift this year included two unique items that will hold a special place in Aramcon hearts: a Las Vegas bean bag bear, adorned with a hijab or shemagh, and a special Jabal Las Vegas 2008 poker chip, in various denominations. Unfortunately, all the chips were just souvenirs, as some annuitants with $1000 chips were a bit disappointed to discover.

After dinner, the night continued with dancing, drinking and conversation, while anticipating two more fun-filled days of reuniting with old friends and faces.

This was the most disappointing reunion I have attended. The sound systems in the ballrooms were so bad it was impossible to hear the speakers.  The choice of entertainment was totally inappropriate.  This was a gathering of old friends, many of whom had not seen each other for a while.  To have singers and music at such a loud level made it impossible to converse.  To receive a berating and embarrassment by a person yelling at the crowd to be quiet was unforgivable.  We were all there to see one another and not be subjected to some girls attempt to entertain.
Running out of meat and fish on the first night, not enough tables and chairs or dessert on the second night and running out of tiny sweet rolls by 9:20am on the last day when the time posted for breakfast was to run until 11:00am should never have happened.  Poor planing was obvious.

How do I know it was an amazing Aramco reunion?  My voice! You see, friends, brats, and retirees who saw me on day four noticed that I did not have one anymore!   A very BIG  "wajet zain"  to all the Jabal Las Vegas 2008 Reunion organizers!   1100 attendees is one for the record books!

A significant concern I had was the cost of Tuesday's light "supper". The $65 per person seemed excessive for what was just h'or dourves/appetizers.  $65/person should have bought much more, including enough seating.

Additionally, the departure breakfast menu was sparse and disappointing at a cost of $21/person.

    Amen, Scott Stanland!

Having flown to the reunion from London, the food on United Airlines far surpassed the $65 'light supper' and the $21 departure breakfast.

As the saying goes: ‘Make a fool of me once, shame on you. Make a fool of me twice, shame on me’!

By the way, the Paris Hotel buffet breakfast was $14.95!

I would like to take this opportunity to THANK YOU all who have participated in the Tennis Tournament.  Twice as many people signed up this year than at the last reunion -- what a fantastic group of players came together.  You all made the Tournament a wonderful event.  Non-players also came to watch the matches and cheer us on.  It was a nice morning to visit with each other between matches, making new friends, reminiscing of tennis matches of yore.  I hope that all of you were satisfied with the tournament format and had a good time.
Thank you again for coming and making the Tennis Tournament a success.  Last, but not least, THANK YOU Karen Fallon for giving me the opportunity to chair the Tennis Tournament, I loved doing it!

The Society of Simulated Sports of Dhahran held a tournament of 6 NFL simulated football games between the 4 competing teams to determine the  winner of "Vegas Bowl IV" (reminisce of "Bahrain Bowl" tournaments).  The winner was Keith McCormack, Terry Hamblin, and Dan Cook using the best of the best players dating back to 1969 and Quarterback John Hadl.  In second place was Ralph Barracano, and Bill Pinkston .  Runners up were the team of Jim Maher and Byron Peterson and the team of Bob Loeb and Jim Wallace.

As I got off the plane yesterday and got home, my first trip was to the computer -- that was way after midnight my time...... thus my failure to mention my friend and give her the acknowledgment she truly deserves.   I  want to take the opportunity to thank Diane Jackson for helping me with the Tennis Tournament.  Her expertise was a great help to me.  Besides Diane's invaluable help I found a great friend in her.  Thanks Diane, thanks a million.  You made us shine and organize a wonderful & professional tennis tournament.  We made a great team.  See you in 2 years.  Eva

Without exception, the annuitants who volunteered to help with the various stages of Jabal Las Vegas did so with spirit and goodwill.  Some stayed beyond their time to fill in for those who were not able to make their time frame.  To all these people I say "well done"..you helped make the reunion very special.  You have our profound thanks.
Saying that, we wish to thank all those who attended and have taken the time to comment. Please see the next issue for a survey.  This is the place to place all your well thought-out comments which will definately impact future reunions.  We really mean this, because no one can know what is important to attendees without honest suggestions.
