M. Yusof Rafie was named Senior Vice President, Gas Operations, on October 1, 2005, re-assuming responsibility for Saudi Aramco's rapidly expanding gas business, including plants, planning, engineering, maintenance and future development. For four years prior to that, he held the post of Senior Vice President, Industrial Relations.
Yusof Rafie joined the Company in November 1970 after graduating from the University of Cairo with a B.S. degree in Petroleum Engineering. He also completed the Management Development Program from Georgetown University and an Executive Development Program from Cornell University.
For the next five years, he worked in Petroleum Engineering as a Drilling, Production and then Reservoir Engineer. In 1975, he progressed from Foreman to Assistant Superintendent, Safaniya Producing. In 1978 he was named Superintendent, Dhahran Producing Division, and in 1980 Superintendent, Safaniya Producing. Mr. Rafie was promoted to Manager, Ras Tanura Producing Department, in December 1981 and to General Manager, Safaniya Producing, in January 1985. In 1986 Mr. Rafie was named General Manager of Petroleum Engineering.
He served as Executive Director of Petroleum Engineering and Development and Northern Area Producing in 1991 and 1992, and was appointed Vice President of Northern Area Producing in December 1992. In December 1993, Mr. Rafie was named Vice President, Employee Relations and Training. In January 1997, he was then assigned as Vice President, Petroleum Engineering and Development, and became Senior Vice President, Gas Operations, in June 2000. In November 2001, he was named Senior Vice President, Industrial Relations
Mr. Rafie served as a member of Saudi Arabian Government's negotiating team for the Kingdom's Natural Gas Initiative (NGI) in 2000. He was a board member of the General Organization for Social Insurance (GOSI) and Middle East Regional Director of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) from 1997- 1999. He has been a national committee member of the World Petroleum Congress since 1990, and in 2002 was appointed as Chairman of the Board of Aramco Gulf Operations Company (AGOC).
