Despite a perfectly good lakefront jogging path in the city, I opted for a chance to run in the "Hood to Coast", a 197-mile relay road race from Mt. Hood to the Oregon coast. As part of a 12-person team, I ran three legs of the relay, each between 5 and 8 miles, up and down "gently rolling hills," (my quads say mountains) at all hours of the day.
My favorite leg was actually the longest, which ocurred at 1 in the morning, when the heat of the day had passed and the stars were at their brightest.
Over 1000 teams competed, with elite teams sponsored by Nike and other companies finishing in 16 hrs or so, and others (including Erin's team the "Burning Bunions") wandering in closer to 30 hrs. Hey, we finished!!!
I encourage any and all runners to check out this race. A sense of humor and several pairs of socks are encouraged.
