The Arabian Sun - 7/25

MERCERSBURG, Pennsylvania — Former Dhahran Little League standout Cord Heine, now a senior at Mercersburg Academy, has been named to the elite 2007 2nd Team All-American roster by the high school Baseball Coaches Association of America (BCAA), and to the BCAA’s first-team All-District II squad, encompassing schools in the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia.

Cord is the first player from the academy selected to an All-American team. He is the son of Chris Heine, a senior geological consultant with Saudi Aramco, and his wife, Deirdre, a longtime front-office employee at Dhahran Hills School, now retired.

A power-hitting right-fielder for the Mercersburg Blue Storm, Heine also earned a spot on the 2007 first team of the All Mid-Atlantic Prep League (MAPL) and was named All-Area Player of the Year by the Hagerstown (Maryland) Mail newspaper.

The 2nd team All-American honors recognize Heine as one of the nation’s premier high-school outfielders. He is one of only 41 high-school players named to the three All-American teams. He was nominated by legendary coach John Lowery of Jefferson (West Virginia) High School and by the chairman of BCAA District II.

Cord had a stellar season at Mercersburg, batting .575 in 26 games, with 13 home runs — the school’s singleseason homer record — and 51 RBIs (runs batted in), leading the Storm to its second Pennsylvania Independent School state and MAPL championship in three years. He stroked 46 total hits during the season, including 14 doubles and three triples.

“Cord had an outstanding year for us,” Mercersburg head coach Karl Reisner said in an article on the school’s Web site. “His offensive numbers were unbelievable, given the schedule we played. Baseball is a team game, but Cord really put the team on his back and carried us to a state championship this year. I look for him to be very successful at the college level.”

Cord plans to attend the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, a Division-1 school, playing baseball on an athletic scholarship for the Minutemen in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Heine intends to major in engineering.

The Mercersburg senior was one of only four District II players to earn All-American honors this year and only one of two players from Pennsylvania. The other Pennsylvanian All-American, Devin Mesoraco of Punxsutawney High School, was a first-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds.
