Twenty Aramcons set out to conquer the Maratona di Roma (Rome Marathon) and, on March 18, 2007, after traveling the full 26 miles and 385 yards over the cobbled streets of the Eternal City, all twenty Aramcons triumphantly crossed the finish line in the arching afternoon shadows of the ancient Coliseum.
This achievement followed months of training and preparing for the race including: dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, early morning runs, midday runs, late night runs, muscle cramps, blisters, sprains, rains, shamals, purple toenails, blue funks, expensive running shoes, expensive running shorts, expensive running tops, marathon socks, marathon hats, gloves, nipple guards, highs, lows, dread, pride, new iPod headphones, massage therapy sessions, Jacuzzi time, organizational meetings, paperwork, babysitters, emails, physical exams, power gels, power goos, sports drinks, non-sports drinks, hotel booking, flight arranging, L-day taking, researching, strategizing, visualizing, bonding, straining, whining, fretting, smiling, groaning, moaning, puffing, huffing, sweating, pacing, striding, cross-training, tapering, and, most importantly, loads of laughing.
The group was unanimous in its endorsement of the Rome Marathon organizing committee’s excellent performance. The website worked smoothly. Pick-up of bib numbers and radio chip was easy. Drink and aid stations offered sports drinks, water, and fruit every five kilometers. And the route was spectacular enough to take one’s mind off the pain (temporarily.) The whole experience will never be forgotten by those who participated, or by those who supported us, as well. See you at the next one. Inshallah. Well, done!
