DHAHRAN — “Piecing” in quilters’ terms means putting the parts together to form a whole, and “Piecing it Together” was the theme of the Nov. 9 Dhahran Oasis Quilt Guild’s (DOQG) show at al-Waha.
There, members displayed 82 quilts of different categories. Also displayed were 24 “comfort quilts,” to be given to hospital patients, that illustrated the members’ efforts to “piece together” for a good cause.
Among the entries were “challenge quilts,” for which members were provided the same set of materials to come up with a quilt that represents “Mother Earth Rejoices.” The challenge gave entrants the opportunity to show off their individuality.

In voting by guild members, Linda Lusby’s “What Was She Thinking!” got the first prize, Debra Sprague’s “All Creation is Shouting for Joy” second and Sally Haskell’s “Poppies in Bloom” third. In a craft corner, guild members’ crafts were on sale. The items included quilted book covers, table runners, trivets, coasters, tissue-box holders, tissue-roll holders, post cards and wall hangings.
Visitors could watch machine quilting and hand-quilting demonstrations.
Guild members also voted for winners in each of several categories, while nonmember visitors voted for Viewers’ Choice (Linda Lusby’s “Whirlpool”) and Best of Show (Sue Wolfe’s “Sue’s Stainglass Flower Garden”).
Sue Wolfe's "Sue's Stainglass Flower Garden" won Best of Show
The top three in each category were:
- Contemporary — “Whirlpool,” by Linda Lusby; “Ribbon Candy Swirls,” by Patti Taber; and “Black and White and Red All Over,” by Patti Taber.
- Group — “12 Days,” by Kathleen Britton; “Kliamovich Baltimore Album,” by Renea Kliamovich; and “North American Bear Paw,” by Brenda Haddow.
- Hand Appliqué — “Sue’s Stainglass Flower Garden,” by Sue Wolfe; “Pocket Full of Posies,” by Linda Lusby; and “Falling Leaves,” by Ellen Tobert.
- Machine Appliqué — “Carolyn’s Last Matroshkya Dolls,” by Patti Taber; “Waiting,” by Sally Haskell; and “Harvest Party,” by Patti Taber.
- Novelty — “Star Light, Star Bright,” by Sue Wolfe; “Castles Under the Sea,” by Cindy Hotaling; and “Casablanca Tote,” by Layne Rahbar.
- Small — “Marmalade,” by Sally Haskell; “Every Good Dog Deserves a Good Bone,” by Debra Sprague; and “Mariner’s Compass,” by Patti Taber.

Another winner was Kylie Pogorzelski who won a queensize quilt in a drawing at the end of the show.
“Voting is a task, as all the quilts on display are beautiful on their own,” one visitor said. Two women said that they enjoyed the show but could not vote because all the quilts were beautiful and they couldn’t decide on a favorite.
Most of the members said they were quilting not for the show or the competition but that the show was a great place to display their work and gave them added incentive to apply their art.
