John B. Thompson is a National Council Malone Fellow in Arab and Islamic Studies. He has participated in previous National Council Malone Fellowships to Oman and Saudi Arabia. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1961 with a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering Degree and in 1967 from the School of Law. He served two years in the U.S. Army in West Germany as a field artillery officer (1962-64). He was employed by the Reynolds Metal Company as staff attorney from 1967-70 in Richmond, VA, and as assistant to Vice President for Government Relations, 1970-1972 in Washington, DC.
Mr. Thompson entered private law practice in 1972 in Richmond, VA, and founded the firm Thompson McMullan with C. Grice McMullan in 1973. The firm presently consists of 26 lawyers with a full scope of practice skills to serve the legal needs of small businesses and their owners, including the need to protect their interests in litigation with government agencies at all levels and businesses of all sizes. Mr. Thompson’s practice has evolved over the last 35 years from a very general practice to a present emphasis on business transactions and business litigation.
He is also a member of the regional panel of commercial arbitrators of the American Arbitration Association and has been added to the Association’s Large Complex Case Panel. He serves as Vice President and General Counsel of Virginians for High Speed Rail, as a Fellow and Board member of the Virginia Rail Policy Institute, and as a member of the Board of the Richmond Alliance for Quality Growth. Mr. Thompson has been active in a variety of civic organizations, including service on the Richmond, Virginia City Council and the Governor’s Regional Economic Development Council. He formerly served as chairman of the James River Association and as a member of the boards of the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and Meritas, a worldwide organization consisting of 200 independent business and litigation law firms located in more than 70 countries. Mr. Thompson is currently a member of the State Water Control Board.
