Take a globe or world map, and look way, way, way down south. The Southern Ocean is the wide stretch of ocean which surrounds Antarctica.
To check out the penguins there, Barnaby B. Bear took a trip in the Southern Ocean, to the Falklands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula. He found plenty of pulchritudinous penguins, black-browed albatross, savvy seals and awesome icebergs. He had some interesting interactions with penguins, some that left him feeling a little wary! He was up on the bridge of the ship, helping the Captain and being generally useful. Upon reaching Palmer Station, one of three U.S. bases in Antarctica, he finds out what it is like to live in a remote place. He learns what penguins need to beware of, and even takes a dip in a hot-pool – no kidding!
His story, told on a CD, was written for children of elementary and middle school age. Told in a light-hearted way, Barnaby B. Bear’s trip was both educational and a great deal of fun! It is the first in the series Barnaby: A Bear Abroad, and is soon to be followed by Barnaby Goes Arctic!
