His shoulders straight,
Confident tread,
White upon white,
White trimmed beard, white thobe, white prayer breads
Purity personified.
He heads out to the mosque,
Smiling his gentle smile,
Gentle eyes gazing at the world
Looking out with scholarly eyes,
Greeting young and old,
Along the sidewalk,
Embracing the familiar in the courtyard
Spirit high entering the peaceful hallowed hall
Heading to the bookshelves,
Running his hands through the Book,
Pages touched, turned, read and pondered over
By thousands, tens of thousands
He kneels, reads, and is content.
The prayer call rings out,
He heads through the forming columns,
Of black and white,
Of visages from distant lands
Bonded at this special time,
He heads for his place,
People part,
He heads them all.
With his vast learning,
Wisdom and forgiving soul,
His melodious voice praises the One
While all join in harmony,
Seeking forgiveness, peace and blessing.
*Imam is the Arabic word for leader.
