DHAHRAN -- Television audiences in Britain relished each new episode of “‘Allo ‘Allo,” and the playwrights, Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft went on to write a play of the same name. Now the Dhahran Theatre Group brings it to you in the splendidly renovated theatre. It’s a hilarious comedy about a cafe owner reluctantly caught up in the French Resistance during the occupation of France.
The patron (Ron Sprague) and his wife (Linda Esposito), plus the two waitresses (Paula Owen and Sue Belvo), find themselves key players in plans to thwart the enemy. Those plans start out with hiding allied pilots (Danielle Mantyh and Mairi Ball), aided by agent Leclerc (Bob Smith), much to the discomfort of the granny (Jan Biggs). But it gets worse – or better; crazy anyway. Michelle of the Resistance (Susan Heslington) and a British spy (David Crookes), decide to blow up the Fuehrer when he visits the café.
He’s coming to get a priceless painting from General Von Schmelling (Janet Gibson), who stole it from Colonel von Strohm (Graham White) and Captain Bertorelli (Paul Carr), who stole it from Herr Flick (Keith Kynoch). Flick wants the painting so he can sell it and run away to Brazil with Helga (Linda Pilon). Edith – the café owner’s wife - fancies hiding the painting, Lieutenant Gruber (Timir Mukherjee) fancies the café owner, and Rene, the café owner, fancies having nothing to do with any of it.
To untangle the thread of this tapestry of intrigue, and to discover the secret concealed in the knockwurst sausage, you’ll need to come to the Dhahran theatre and see ‘Allo ‘Allo. You’ll be guaranteed for a laugh. Directed by Keith Kynoch, it’s playing March 13 – 16.
