LIZ Noble of the Messai'eed Golf Club in Qatar finished four strokes ahead of former champion Emma Boyd of Awali Golf Club to claim the 17th Bahrain Ladies Open Golf Championship which concluded yesterday at the Awali Golf Club.

Noble carded a second day 81 which included birdies on the 10th, 13th and 18th holes for an overall 170.

The contest was tight at the 11th hole as Noble and Boyd were tied on 141 with Hilary Picton a stroke behind on 142 while defending champion Brenda Wood was five shots off the pace.

The tension increased as only three strokes separated the top five players including former St Christopher's School student Katy Nottingham, the youngest competitor at 17, who later moved up to joint second.

Noble finished in style with a birdie on the 18th to lift the title while Boyd held on to second place ahead of Katy, Picton and Wood who finished on 175.

No one scored an eagle or a hole-in-one to win a Mini Cooper on the sixth hole.

"It was a good day for me and I attribute my victory to the luck of the Awali bounce and the much improved weather," said Noble.

"It was close and a deserving win for Liz," said Boyd.

"I had a really good back nine and was very pleased with the way things turned out," said Katy.

More than 50 golfers from Bahrain, England, Ireland, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE took part in the event.

Prizes were awarded by Batelco's senior manager for corporate affairs Ahmed Janahi, Bahrain International Airport director of marketing and promotion David Ryan and the tournament chairperson Magda Roberts.

The main sponsors of the event were Bahrain International Airport and Batelco and the co-sponsors were AMEX, Bapco, Caltex Bahrain, DHL, Euromotors, Gulf Air, African and Eastern, Gulf Cellar, National Bank of Bahrain, Norwich Union, National Hotels and Services Co and Ebrahim K Kanoo.
