The first Little League baseball in Saudi Arabia got underway last week with Dhahran District Manager K. R. Webster tossing out the first ball in the Dhahran opener. Mrs. Geraldine Turner, representing the Ras Tanura Woman's group, did the tossing in the Refinery Town Opener.
R.A. Eeds, commissioner of Little League Ball for Saudi Arabia, gave a short talk on the history and objectives of the Little League at Dhahran contest.
The first games played featured the Dhahran Panthers and the Ras Tanura bombers in the Aramco Headquarters town, and two other Dhahran and Ras Tanura teams in the Refinery Town.
In both contests, the home-town teams proved that it helps to play on your own diamond. The visitor was downed in both cases.
At Dhahran, the score was 24-1 with Dhahran winning a walkaway game over the R.T. Bombers. Dhahran scored 16 runs in the second inning, 12 before anyone was out, mostly on a succession of walks.
In Ras Tanura, the Refinery Boys kept the game tied up until the seventh when they copped an extra run to win over Dhahran 9 to 8.
Schedule of games for this week is as follows: (All games at 3 p.m.)
April 23, Dhahran Pirates at Abqaiq. Ras Tanura Gazelles at Dhahran Panthers.
April 29, Ras Tanura Gazelles at Ras Tanura Bombers. Dhahran Panthers at Abqaiq.
