Bergen, Norway
Bergen, the second-largest city in Norway, has welcomed travelers from all over the world for over one thousand years. The city was founded in 1070 and has been home to royalty, the Hanseatic League’s “counting house,” and Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. In May 2008, the city will host the Aramco ExPats Travel Club as a premiere destination on the Norwegian Splendor tour.
We will travel to Bergen by car, boat and train. In Myrdal, we will board the Flaam Railway, completed in 1944 after twenty years of work. The railway’s twisting route through Flaam Valley and mountain tunnels remains a marvel of engineering ingenuity to this day. The scenic landscapes through the mountains and along the Aurland and Naeroy fjords will captivate passengers until our arrival in Bergen for dinner.
Our first day in Bergen takes us to the home of Edvard Grieg’s house, Troldhaugen, which means “the troll’s hill.” Grieg is widely regarded as one of the most prominent representatives of Nordic music and often acted as a musical ambassador for the nation during his tours of Europe with his wife Nina. Troldhaugen, his beloved Norwegian summer home, now houses a living museum dedicated to the composer’s life, including a two hundred seat concert hall.
Ride the Funicular Railway to the top of Mount Floyen.
We’ll also make our way to the famous Bergen fish market with fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables, and handicrafts for sale. The market is located in the heart of Bergen and there are lots of other sights to see within walking distance.
If you’re looking for the best view of Bergen, take a ride on the Funicular Railway, which departs every hour and half hour all day, to the top of Mount Floyen. From this point, 320 meters above sea level, you’ll enjoy views of the city and surrounding islands. From this vista, you’ll have access to multiple paths for leisurely walks through the woods to see lakes and mountains. There’s also a year-round souvenir shop and a restaurant at the top of mountain offering an exciting menu prepared with first-class produce.
Enjoy outdoor dining along the Bergen waterfront.
There is plenty of outdoor dining along the water in Bergen, like Café Kippers USF (USF stands for “United Sardine Factory,” which has since been converted into a center for culture and arts). To stimulate the finer palate, the Emily Restaurant at the Admiral Hotel offers delicacies from the sea, as well as meat dishes on their a la carte menu.
Hoping to unwind after dinner? The Dyvekes Wine Cellar, housed in a building from the 13th century, is highly recommended. The Baklommen Bar has a cozy and traditional atmosphere for a mature crowd, while Rick’s is a classic place offering top-notch drinks and service. These, and many other restaurants, bars, and nightclubs, are located in the center of Bergen.
