A puppy frantically fights to keep its head above water.
UMM SUDAYRAH, December 17, 2007 -- It’s not every day that routine jobs turn into rescue missions, but on a recent trip to test a remote water well at Umm Sudayrah, Muayed A. Al-Mahdi and Ali A. Al-Ammar from the Groundwater Division of the Reservoir Characterization Department found themselves in the middle of just such a mission.
The Groundwater Division routinely tests water wells. In the tests, water is discharged into a dedicated pit. On this occasion, shortly after starting the pump, Ali noticed a dog jumping into the pit and grabbing something in her mouth. At the same time, he heard some squealing above the noise of the pump and realized that the dog was rescuing one of her puppies from drowning.
Six more puppies were still in the pit, and the water was rising fast.
Ali A. Al-Ammar wades into the mud to rescue the puppy.
With help from Al-Mahdi, Al-Ammar immediately waded into the pit and carried three of the puppies out to safety. Meanwhile the mother dog was conducting a parallel rescue mission, saving two more puppies. Then, with the water level already high and the bottom of the pit a quagmire, Al-Ammar bravely re-entered the pit and saved the last puppy just in time.
A happy mother dog came over and collected the four puppies Al-Ammar had rescued to reunite them with the other three. Al-Ammar washed the mud from his boots and returned with Al-Mahdi to the routine of testing the well.
All in a day’s work at Groundwater Division.
