The conference, under the patronage of H.E. Dr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, President of the Republic of Indonesia, and in the presence of Yemen’s Minister of Oil and Minerals Khaled M. Bahah, was co-sponsored by the Society of Indonesia Petroleum Engineers (IATMI). The theme was “Resources, Professionalism, Technology: Time to Deliver.”

The opening ceremony was marked by the signing of several energy deals. The event is a vital gathering, bringing together exploration and producing professionals from the region and the world. Practitioners and researchers joined in knowledge-sharing and dialogue to advance the technology and best practices of the disciplines applied to meeting today’s energy challenges.

Keynote speakers and authors addressed the industry’s current challenges, including resource needs, professional accountability, social responsibility and technology evolution. More than 1,800 attended the conference, in which 115 technical papers were presented and discussed with more than 30 exhibiting companies.

Al-Buraik spoke about the interdependence of the theme’s main elements: resources, professionalism and technology. He also discussed the key role people play in global development and shared his perspective on the world’s population and energy consumption. Al-Buraik showed that with respect to the distribution of energy supply, fossil fuels will remain the primary source of energy for the foreseeable future.

He went on to explain that the key to developing new technology is understanding what goes on in hydrocarbon reservoirs. He used examples of Saudi Aramco’s cutting-edge technologies in seismic resolution, reservoir simulation and the new generation of smart wells that use wireless communication technology. Al-Buraik also explained the company’s exploration of the concept of Extreme Reservoir Contact, or ERC, wells to maximize recovery.

He concluded by making the link between technology and human resources, saying technology is invented and driven by talented people. “It is part of our mission to transfer the accumulated skills and knowledge of our seasoned generation to young people,” Al-Buraik said. The goal, he continued, is to make sure that young people continue to see the attractions of working in the petroleum industry.

Among the presenters was Dr. Abdulrahman S. Al-Jarri, manager of the Safaniya Offshore Producing Department. Al-Jarri participated in a panel discussion, during which he delivered his presentation, “Delivering Energy to the World.” Al-Jarri talked about the business environment of the petroleum industry, highlighting the external and internal factors that influence it. He also identified the challenges facing the industry and discussed ways to overcome them.

“The future of the petroleum industry is bright and exciting,” he concluded, adding that its success in meeting future energy needs will depend greatly on investments in resource growth and cultivation, technology advancement and innovation, the nurturing of people and momentum - all in harmony with the environment.
