HOUSTON, January 02, 2008 -- Progress on the Ras Tanura Refinery Arabian Heavy Expansion Project took a major step forward recently as Mohammed Y. Al-Qahtani, president and CEO of Aramco Services Co., and Edward Pagano, president of U.S. Operations for the Worley Parsons Resources and Energy Co., signed an agreement to launch the first phase of the project.
The agreement involves development of a detailed project proposal that will outline design protocols and scope of work for the expansion project.
Mohammed Y. Al-Qahtani, seated left, and Edward Pagano sign an agreement to begin major development of the Ras Tanura Refinery Arabian Heavy Expansion Project. Additional representatives from ASC, Saudi Aramco and Worley Parsons were present to help celebrate the event.
The signing ceremony was held at ASC and included a group of representatives from ASC and Worley Parsons. Saudi Aramco’s Ali A. Al-Sadeg, who is serving as the senior project manager, was also present.
ASC will provide logistical and material support for the Saudi Aramco Ras Tanura Expansion Project Team, which is in Arcadia, Calif. The team will work closely with Worley Parsons to develop a plan to increase Ras Tanura refining capacity from 550,000 barrels per day to about 950,000 bpd by 2012.
“With the signing of this agreement, we are celebrating a significant milestone event,” said Al-Qahtani. “Upon completion, this project will significantly increase Saudi Aramco’s refining capacity to help meet growing domestic energy needs.”
Pagano added that the Worley Parsons team is “very excited” to be a part of the important project.
Saudi Arabia is experiencing an increased demand for all types of refined products, especially gasoline and fuel oil. To keep pace, Saudi Aramco made the decision to greatly expand its Ras Tanura refining facility to help ensure adequate supplies of gasoline, diesel and fuel oil in the future.
Additionally, the expansion project will provide the required feedstocks to the Ras Tanura Integrated Refining and Petrochemicals Project in Ras Tanura.
The Ras Tanura expansion project will serve the Kingdom’s demand for fuel products in both the Eastern and Central Provinces.
