HOUSTON, Texas, December 09, 2009 -- Saudi Aramco’s activities at the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) International Exposition and 79th Annual Meeting once again demonstrated the company’s commitment to the industry and its high expectations for the Middle East.

The company served as a platinum-level sponsor and also supported the conference’s Global Theater, a venue for presenters to discuss the significant role the Middle East plays in global energy supplies.

The conference attracted 9,000 professionals in the geosciences, with 30 percent of those in attendance coming from outside North America. About 50 Saudi Aramco and Aramco Services Co. (ASC) employees, including 15 company-sponsored students, participated.

“Events like the annual SEG conference offer an excellent opportunity to exchange knowledge and explore collaborative research projects in order to address the challenges of future oil exploration and production,” said ASC president and CEO Ali A. Abuali.

The ASC exhibit booth received heavy traffic throughout the conference, with a large number of professionals stopping by to talk about careers with Saudi Aramco. Potential candidates were interviewed by ASC recruiters and Saudi Aramco technical representatives.

“There was a great deal of interest in Saudi Aramco, both as a technology leader and as an employer,” said ASC Industrial Relations manager Abdulwahab Al-Abbas. “It was especially gratifying to see the high level of awareness of Saudi Aramco and its activities, a good sign that the company’s positive reputation remains strong.”

The conference also hosted more than 600 technical presentations, the most of any SEG conference ever. Timothy Keho, geophysical consultant, and Panos G. Kelamis, chief technologist of the EXPEC Advanced Research Center (EXPEC ARC) Geophysics Technology Team, presented “A New Era in Land Seismic: The Near-Surface Challenge.” Keho and Kelamis gave an overview of challenges such as signal-to-noise ratio, statics, imaging and surface multiples, and the importance of imaging in addressing the challenges.

During the conference, Kelamis was honored with a Life Membership Award recognizing his outstanding service to SEG and his professional contributions to geophysics.

“Receiving this award is not only an honor for me; it is also an indication of the strong support Saudi Aramco provides for employees to grow and advance in their field, and to assume leadership roles in the international scientific arena,” Kelamis said.

At the company’s exhibit booth, Trino Salinas presented “Imaging Challenges in Saudi Arabia — An Offshore Case Study.” Additionally, Shivaji Dasgupta spoke at the Global Theater about maximizing reserves through the use of nanotechnology, intelligent fields and other methods.

Company representatives also presented six other papers: Yi Luo and Yuchun Wang discussed “Vector Median Filter and its Applications in Geophysics”; Keho and Weihong Zhu presented “Revisiting Automatic First Arrival Picking for Large 3D Land Surveys”; Roy Burnstad looked at “New Concepts in Quality Control for 3D Near Surface Modeling”; Saleh Al-Dossary and Wang explored “Estimating Incoherent Noise in Poststack Seismic Data”; Shoudong Huo, Luo and Kelamis presented “Simultaneous Sources Separation via Multidirectional Vector-Median Filter”; and Qiang Fu and Luo discussed “Locating Micro-seismic Epicenters in Common Arrival Time Domain.”
