Peggy Tennyson has 18 years experience as a teacher, and has written curriculum for middle school theatre arts and music programs and developed materials for and designed an adult ESL program for community organizations.
As an administrator for the Houston READ Commission, Ms. Tennyson negotiated space for their now largest learning center, and set up partnerships with local businesses and community organizations to develop student programs. She also coordinated the set up of a bookstore containing hundreds of thousands of volumes of books.
She came to Institute of International Education, IIE, in 1999 as an associate in the Student Services Department. Shortly, she was promoted to the manager of Volunteer Services that was recently expanded to include Educational Outreach. The two areas were combined to form Community Outreach.
As the CO manager, Ms. Tennyson has grown the volunteer services and launched the Cultural Navigators Project. She is a member of the Society for Intercultural Education Training and Research (SIETAR), the Houston Association for Volunteer Administrators (HAVA) and is on the board of the International Youth Friendship and Development Project. She has served on several educational and cultural boards, and was once a host mother to high school exchange students.
As the manager of the Cultural Navigators Project Mobile Trunk Lending Program, I am very excited about having the chance to experience first-hand the culture of Saudi Arabia that I have been promoting to teachers. I have learned a great deal through reading and lectures, but there is nothing like experiencing a different culture in person.
