Marcia Looper is a Houstonian currently teaching fifth grade Social Studies and Language Arts in Spring Branch Independent School District at Valley Oaks Elementary. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education at the University of Texas in Austin. Marcia holds certifications in Reading, Gifted and Talented, English as a Second Language (ESL), Kindergarten and Early Childhood Education for the Handicapped Child. In 1999, Marcia was awarded the PTA Honorary Lifetime Membership. She was voted Valley Oaks Teacher of the Year in the year 2000 and again in 2004 by her colleagues. She was recently named the 2004 Spring Branch ISD Elementary Teacher of the Year.
Marcia is frequently asked to write curriculum and present workshops in social studies and reading by her district. She serves as a trainer for the Texas Reading Academies for Region IV Education Center. Marcia also works on a consultant basis, as a reading specialist, for Classroom Connect, developing and presenting workshops designed to target education needs as defined by No Child Left Behind legislation. Her professional memberships include Texas Council Social Studies (TCSS), National Council Social Studies (NCSS), Friends of Geography (FOG) and Texas Association for Gifted and Talented (TAGT).
Marcia is very enthusiastic to learn and exchange ideas with other educational programs locally and abroad. She is constantly seeking ways to expand her ability to inspire young people to understand their own culture, as well as reach out to other cultures with curiosity, compassion, and educated understanding. She sees this opportunity to go to Saudi Arabia as an amazing opportunity to broaden her experiences and vision to make an impact on young people.
