MANAMA, February 13, 2008 --  More than 450 engineers came together Feb. 3-6 for the 12th Middle East Corrosion Conference at the Gulf International Convention Center in Bahrain.

About 100 scientific papers were discussed over the three-day meeting, which was organized by the West Asia and Africa Region and Saudi Arabia Section of the National Association of Corrosion Engineers in cooperation with the Bahrain Society of Engineers.

New Technology Attacking Corrosion Playing key roles in the 12th Middle East Corrosion Conference were, from left, Dr. Low Vincent, president of NACE International; Nasser A. Al-Wohaibi; Fahmi ibn Ali Al-Jowder, Minister of Works and Minister in Charge of the Water and Electricity Authority, Kingdom of Bahrain; Mohammed K. Al-Sayed, president of the Bahrain Society of Engineers; and Dr. Faisal M. Al-Faqeer.

Topics included cathodic protection; chemical treatment; corrosion research, modeling and monitoring; materials and welding; protective coatings; water treatment; and chemical cleaning.

An area of particular interest was the use of new, nonmetallic materials that are much more resistant to corrosion than older steel equipment.

“Our vision is to expand and promote the use of cost-effective, nonmetallic products and petrochemical technologies,” said Saudi Aramco Consulting Services Department manager Nasser A. Al-Wohaibi. “To this end, we have just installed and commissioned the first nonmetallic jump-over in crude oil service in the company.”

Al-Wohaibi noted the company always is on the lookout for new technologies.

“The classical methods of corrosion control are critical to our operations and have been used effectively for decades. We will continue to use these methods for years to come,” he said. “In addition, we have realized that the boundaries of each of these methods keep changing, and new corrosion technologies emerge. We have been actively seeking these technologies and using them to enhance, improve and optimize our corrosion management programs.”

In connection with the conference, a technical exhibit spotlighted the latest advancements in the field of corrosion control, with 50 major manufacturers, service providers, companies and consulting firms taking part.

“This conference has evolved over the past years, keeping pace with the latest developments in the field of corrosion protection and control,” said conference chairman Dr. Faisal M. Al-Faqeer.

“It has become the ideal channel through which science, knowledge and expertise are exchanged among engineers, professionals, academics, manufacturers and users in the region and most parts of the world.”
