Saudi Aramco has four main family communities. Dhahran is the largest community, with a total population of about 11,300. Ras Tanura has about 3,200 residents. Abqaiq and Udhailiyah both have approximately 1,950 residents. Communities are very traditional in character with tree-lined streets, schools, commissary and recreational services.

Saudi Aramco's history dates back to 1933 when the Government of Saudi Arabia signed a concessionary agreement with Standard Oil of California (Socal) allowing them to explore Saudi Arabia for oil. Standard Oil of California passed this concession to a wholly-owned subsidiary called California-Arabian Standard Oil Co. (Casoc).
