Andrews Osborne Academy (AOA) is an independent, college preparatory day and boarding school near just forty minutes from Cleveland.  AOA offers early childhood, elementary, middle and secondary education to committed students in our multicultural settings.  Boarding opportunities are available for students in grades 7-12.  Created from the integration of The Andrews School and The Phillips-Osborne School in the Summer of 2007, Andrews Osborne Academy will continue in the tradition of both institutions.

Academics

With a total school enrollment of 300, the average class size at AOA is just ten students who enjoy a student-teacher ratio of 5 to 1. Not surprisingly, 100% of AOA graduates attend excellent colleges and universities each year. Some choose to remain in Ohio, while others move on to storied institutions such as Purdue, Cornell, Georgetown, and Vassar.

The Andrews curriculum is geared for the student who is high average to gifted in ability and includes honors, Advanced Placement and Independent Study courses.  All seniors are involved in the Senior Project Program which exposes the students to a variety of career and community experiences during the last few weeks of their senior year.  The English as a Second Language program serves our international students with classes in ESL being required of all international students until they have scored at least 550 on the TOEFL examination.

Unique class offerings include Geometry and Art, Film History & Criticism and Textile Exploration. AOA students also have access to day or evening art classes, music lessons, and theater productions at the Willoughby Fine Arts Association, located right on the AOA campus. Students are able to easily enhance their personal or professional portfolio with the very best instruction.

Boarding Life

Students attend Andrews Osborne Academy from countries as far away as Korea, Germany, Mexico, Japan and Saudi Arabia. These young people might have a roommate from Colorado, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Maryland, or even Cleveland. Just imagine the global friendships that are created as students from down the street, across the country and around the world live, laugh and learn from one another.

Over the weekend, students at AOA might take in a movie, shop at a local mall, attend a concert, or just spend time with their friends in the dorm. There are five dormitories, each with a living room and cozy kitchen. Often the refrigerator is stocked by the students with their own selection of “comfort food”.  One of the best features of boarding life at AOA is that there is always a houseparent in each dorm who is there to say goodbye in the morning and to greet the students after school each afternoon.

Boarding students at AOA enjoy time with their friends and have easy access to after school athletic events and club activities. Students also have plenty of time for studying and attend a mandatory study session each evening. Each dormitory also has computers, a fireplace, a piano, a television set, and laundry facilities.  Students may bring their own cell phones and computers.

Athletics

The physical education program is designed to promote physical vitality, sound health, teamwork skills, and school spirit. Students are required to take gym classes and are encouraged to participate in team sports.  Fundamental skills in team and individual sports, including tennis, golf, soccer, basketball, volleyball, archery, and badminton, are emphasized. The school fields interscholastic teams in basketball, lacrosse, soccer, cross country, softball, tennis and volleyball.  The schools’ no-cut policy fosters participation, making it possible for all interested students to be part of a team.  A state-of-the-art field house, with two full-size courts and aerobics, fitness, and weight rooms, was completed in fall 1999.

Equestrian Program

The equestrian facilities at AOA are unparalleled, providing one of  the best programs in the United States, especially at the high school level.  We are home to nationally recognized trainers, riders and horses. In fact, the Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) which governs interscholastic equestrian competitions was co- founded by Roxane Rheinheimer, our equestrian center director. The school riding teams, at both the middle and upper school levels, consistently win top team and individual awards.
