Grand River Academy
Established in 1831, The Grand River Academy is an all-boys, college preparatory high school located in Northeast Ohio, just 45 minutes from Cleveland. The Academy offers a unique, highly structured school day, and provides academic support in order to help students work to their potential. The Academy also offers a unique program specifically designed to meet the needs of our International students.
ACADEMICS
Our college preparatory curriculum is rich in tradition, with college acceptance required for each student prior to graduation. Small classes are the hallmark of The Grand River Academy's education; with an average class size of seven, students have the opportunity to experience tremendous academic growth.
Grand River Academy Academics
The school day, lasting from 8:00 a.m. until 3:15 p.m., includes seven academic periods and a break for lunch. To help guarantee our students' academic success, study hours from 7:30 until 9:00 Sunday through Thursday evenings are mandatory. Most students study in their own dorm rooms under the guidance of the dorm master. Students who have not completed homework assignments and those who have trouble concentrating in their dorm rooms are assigned to a more structured study period, which is held in a classroom under the supervision of a faculty member. Students are encouraged to seek special help from their classroom teachers during this time period; this individual help quite often means the difference between success and failure in a subject.
Students who are experiencing difficulty in their classes are assigned formal help sessions during the evenings, in addition to Saturday mornings. Under the guidance of their regular classroom teachers, they are assisted in studying for upcoming tests or are given drills to further explain material they are having difficulty understanding.
The Resource Center is available as an aid to students in all disciplines. The Academy does assist students with learning differences in the Learning Center on a limited basis and networks with individual teachers to accommodate different learning styles.
Grand River Academy Residential Life
RESIDENTIAL LIFE
The Grand River Academy Residential Life Curriculum is taught during weekly residence hall meetings and every weekend. It is designed to address in house issues among peers, educational concerns and community responsibility. Our community is well heeled with support and communication. We work to develop and refine life skills and at the same time encompass emotional, philosophical, social and intellectual aspects of life at GRA. The curriculum is one that encourages students to reach their full potential in nonacademic as well as academic pursuits. Our environment must recognize students' individuality and contribute to each student's personal growth and well being.
Our purpose is to educate and teach students respect (for themselves and others), integrity, and social skills. All members of the Academy create, develop and uphold a safe and supportive learning environment.
Grand River Academy International Student Program
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT PROGRAM
At Grand River Academy, we believe our International Students play a key role in our total education-for-life approach to learning. We value our International Students because we know we can help them learn about America and life-but equally because they help our American Students learn about the world and life from different and important perspectives.
We have committed to having only 2 students per country per grade, so every International Student will feel and be important, and find it easier to meet and mingle with our American Students.
Most important, we work with each student to create an Individual "How to Succeed & Have More Fun” program that provides guidelines and benchmarks to help him succeed in life and school.
Our International Student Advisor, Mrs. Angela Thomas who is TESOL certified, has created a program to help our International students with their transition into America and Grand River Academy. She will have our International Students as sole responsibility, so each student receives the special attention he needs though the year, in order to make their stay at Grand River successful.
