St. Andrew’s School

St. Andrew’s School in Rhode Island was awarded the distinction of “Exemplary School” by the “Schools Attuned” program in 2002. In 2009, the parent organization of the Schools Attuned program, “All Kinds of Minds,” selected St. Andrew’s as a “School of Distinction” (for more on “All Kinds of Minds” please visit www.allkindsofminds.org).

THE SCHOOL

St. Andrew’s School

St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, Rhode Island, is a non-denominational, co-educational, college preparatory school enrolling boarding and day students in Grades 9-12 and day students in Grades 3-8.

Founded in 1893 by the Reverend William Merrick Chapin, St. Andrew’s originally served as both a home and a school for boys who needed the structure and support it provided. More than 100 years later, the School’s mission has evolved but St. Andrew’s remains a close-knit community – one that is mindful of students whose individual method of learning is not being addressed in other schools, public or private.

St. Andrew’s students seek an educational environment that will help them discover and develop their unique talents. Students, faculty, and administrators at St. Andrew’s are committed to the idea that teaching to an individual student’s strengths leads to overall classroom success.

St. Andrew’s is part of the Exemplary Schools Network, designated by the Schools Attuned Program. Our constant improvements in teaching – and learning – are derived from a multisensory approach aimed at the different ways in which individuals learn. The goal for all students is to develop an understanding of the way they learn best and to master the tools they need to achieve success in school and in life.

St. Andrew’s School

St. Andrew’s is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. It is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools, the Association of Independent Schools of New England, The Association of Boarding Schools, and other organizations. The Learning Disabilities Program is certified by the State of Rhode Island.

St. Andrew’s 100-acre campus is located in the quiet town of Barrington, Rhode Island. Its architecture and lay-out are reminiscent of a small New England college, with handsome stone, brick, and wooden buildings, ranging from modern to traditional, clustered around a central green. Barrington’s new Police and Fire Station is located across the street, and beautiful tidal inlets of Narragansett Bay are within sight of the campus.

THE FACULTY

St. Andrew’s School

John D. Martin assumed his duties as Headmaster in 1996. A native of Chicopee, Massachusetts, he attended Northfield Mount Hermon School and earned a baccalaureate degree with honors in history from Tufts. Mr. Martin also holds a M.Ed. from American International College and a M.Div. from Yale University. His previous experience includes teaching at Tabor Academy, a chaplaincy at Peddie School, and admissions work at Sewickley Academy. Mr. Martin and his wife, Sheila, have three sons.

The Faculty is comprised of approximately 50 teachers, many of whom live on campus. All hold baccalaureate degrees, and more than half hold advanced degrees from such colleges and universities as Brown, Columbia, Harvard, Providence College, Rhode Island School of Design, Trinity College, Tufts, Vassar, and the Universities of Colorado, Michigan, Oregon, and Rhode Island.

THE STUDENT BODY

St. Andrew’s School enrolls slightly more than 220 students each year, of which approximately 180 are in grades 9-12. 35% of the Upper School students board on campus. The student body, which has a 3:1 ratio of boys to girls, represents seven states and four countries, and includes diverse ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds.

THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The school year, operated on a semester basis, runs from September to June and includes Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter, and spring breaks. The student to teacher ratio is 5:1, and all students have a faculty Adviser with whom they meet twice daily for guidance in goal setting, self-monitoring, and developing strategies to become active learners.

St. Andrew’s School

Parents, students, and Advisers work together to create an academic program tailored to each child’s unique learning style. The learning process incorporates a multisensory approach, hands-on experiences, and computer instruction.

St. Andrew’s offers an Honors Program, which allows students to excel in their areas of strength, and challenges each to reach his or her potential. The Resource Program addresses the needs of students with average to above-average IQs who are diagnosed with mild language-based learning differences (about 35% of the total enrollment). Each student enrolled in Resource attends the same college preparatory classes as his or her peers, but receives assistance in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling in lieu of an elective. The Focus Program provides assistance for students with attention disorders. ESL is required for International Students.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

St. Andrew’s School

Every weekend, the School provides extracurricular activities for boarders. The School’s proximity to Providence, Newport, and Boston affords many opportunities for students to attend concerts, plays, and professional ballgames and to visit museums and other attractions.

Athletic activity is considered an extension of classroom learning because it focuses on teamwork, sportsmanship, and interdependence among peers. There are boys’ and girls’ teams in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse, and coed teams in tennis, cross-country, and golf. Examples of individual activities are weight training, biking, and walking. Project Adventure is an on-campus ropes course designed to build self-esteem and encourage problem solving, trust, and collaboration among students and faculty.
