Welcome to Brehm School, where we empower students with complex learning disabilities, grades 6 through 12, to recognize and achieve their full potential.
Since 1982, in partnership with families just like yours, Brehm has been successfully teaching LD students to "learn how to learn." Our "family style" 24/7 boarding school is uniquely designed to foster independence and responsibility.
Brehm is a small, accredited, 501(c)(3) not-for-profit school with a staff of 150, and we limit our focus to about 100 students a year.
Brehm students have a wide range of different learning issues — from Dyslexia, ADHD/ADD, Aphasia, Aspergers, nonverbal learning disorders, visual processing and others.
Guiding the students within the everyday school community are dedicated teachers, speech-language pathologists, psychologists, dorm parents, recreation staff, and tutors. Students along with professionals formulate solutions, put strategies into action, and confirm progress with detailed follow-ups.
Individualized curriculum and attention
Small class sizes, allows Brehm to give our students one-on-one attention. The teaching staff has an average of 12 years of experience — specifically teaching students with learning disabilities.
Brehm provides instruction in core academic areas, social skills development, life-skills development, recreational activities/clubs, cultural enrichment, self advocacy skills, health and wellness direction, and career/college exploration, and transition. Brehm builds a partnership of trust among our staff, the Board of Trustees, an active Parents Association, and our students — all are stakeholders and crucial elements of our success.
Family style living
Brehm's family style living environment, with the oversight and direction of our highly experienced Brehm leadership, fosters countless, real-life, "teachable moments," which in turn promote more responsibility and independent thinking. Students learn both the social skills for interacting with other people and the independent living skills needed to live as happy productive individuals. Brehm also has extensive voluntary recreational activities and clubs such as Robotics. Students select from a variety of different activities on and off our 80 acre campus such as art, pottery, music, community service, bowling, tennis, yoga, swimming, walking, aerobics, dance, basketball, hockey, fishing, horseback riding, and more.

Brehm School has long valued the diversity that international students bring to our campus. Since 1982, Brehm has welcomed students from diverse areas of the world. Brehm’s Primary Designated School Official (PDSO) can issue an I-20 to those students wishing to enroll at Brehm. The school is approved by the International Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) and is a certified Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) school.
Brehm delivers success
Where other schools have failed students, Brehm delivers success. Eighty-eight percent of Brehm graduates continue on to colleges, junior colleges, technical or vocational schools. Brehm students go on to college, find fulfilling careers, and become successful entrepreneurs. Brehm is located in the small midwest town of Carbondale, Illinois, in the United States.
