Art, Marianne and Ann in the 1970's

Art (Ernest Arthur) Sundberg recently of Santa Barbara, California, passed away Tuesday April 29 at 4:00 pm. He is survived by his son Paul Sundberg in Urbana, Illinois and his daughter Ann Sundberg-Johnston (married to Aramco brat Cameron Jonhston) in San Diego, California. His wife, Marianne, passed away less than a year before in August 2002.

Art worked as an internal auditor for Aramco in Dhahran beginning in 1948, spending time in the Hague and New York offices in the early 1950s. He returned to Dhahran, where he brought his wife Marianne Walvoord in 1955 and where he worked until 1977, when he requested a transfer to the Aramco Overseas Co. office in the Hague. The couple enjoyed seven idyllic years there before retiring in 1984 to Woodland Hills, California.

Art was an avid stamp collector, bowler (on the Comptrollers team), volleyball player, and one of the founding members of the Dhahran Protestant Fellowship in the late 40's. He loved the travel opportunities afforded by Aramco, visiting over 50 countries during his lifetime. He also enjoyed collecting fine art and handicrafts from the Middle and Far East. Aramco was his entire career and provided some of the best years of his life.

He suffered a severe hip fracture in 2001, and while recuperating from that, his prostate cancer, in remission for over 10 years, returned. Despite chemotherapy, he continued to lose weight and finally succumbed to the disease after three weeks in the health center at the Samarkand Retirement Community earlier this April.

Cards and/or memorial gifts may be sent to the family care of Ann Sundberg, 2562 Treasure Dr. S-4203, Santa Barbara, CA 93105. Telephone: (310) 410-9804.

The funeral for Art Sundberg will be Friday, May 3 11:00 a.m. at the El Montecito Presbyterian Church, Santa Barbara (exit: San Ysidro) and his interment will be Monday, May 5, 11:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles (exit: Forest Lawn off hwy 134).

Warm greetings and thanks to our many Aramco friends over the years!

Paul and Ann
