Joan Ellen McCabe (nee Hoy) age 84, passed away peacefully August 8, 2017 surrounded by her family. Joan was born in Yonkers, NY on December 2, 1932. A 1950 graduate of Yonkers Roosevelt High School, she then attended The Washington School for Secretaries in New York City. This prepared her for subsequent work at American Arabian Oil Company in Manhattan. Joan married Robert McCabe on July 13, 1957 at St. John the Evangelist Church on Lake Mahopac, NY. She left her work to raise her family with Bob in Yonkers; Galion, OH; and, Shawnee, KS. Joan's career as full time "Mom" of five included being an involved and active leader and advocate to each child and their individual interests, desires, and needs. Passionate about education for her children she was heavily involved in developing curriculum for the private elementary school they all attended and served on numerous boards and committees including serving as President of the PTA.

After her children had grown, Joan enjoyed her work in the bridal gown business and an entrepreneurial foray into wedding planning and consultation. She was an active member of the Vanderslice Committee in support of the Kansas City Art Institute. Joan cherished family trips to Cape Cod, where she and Bob spent their honeymoon. The last 3 years of Joan's life was greatly enriched and comforted by the presence of Daisy, the little black dog Joan adopted from Great Plains SPCA. Daisy was a constant presence on Joan's lap or at Joan's side and adored by everyone who met her.

Joan was predeceased by her husband Bob, parents Vincent and Sarah Hoy, sister Janet and brother Bob. She is survived by her 5 children, having guided then to a cumulative 8 college degrees: Robert Jr (Holly) of Minneapolis, MN; Nancy (Andrew) Thall of Alma MI; William (Susan) of Stilwell, KS; Kathleen (Thomas) Chastain of Lee's Summit, MO; and, Patricia (Steven) Rawls of Fredericksburg, TX. Joan is also survived by her 10 grandchildren Caroline, Brennan, Robert, Audrey, Thomas, Jack, Matthew, Alberto, Hank and Sarah as well as one great grandchild Khloe.

Visitation will be held Monday August 14; 6:00 to 8:00 PM, with Rosary at 7:45, at McGilley Memorial Chapel 12301 State Line Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 15, 10:00 AM at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church, 130 N.W. Murray Rd., Lee's Summit, MO. Burial will take place at a later date at Cape Cod, MA.
