Roy Frederick Bolles

7 July 1952 - 9 August 1970

Under: Obituary

A motorcycle accident last Sunday morning, Aug. 9, took the life of Roy Frederick Bolles, 18-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur S. Bolles.

Memorial services were held yesterday morning in the Dhahran Theater.

Born in Dhahran July 7, 1952, Roy began his education at the Dhahran School. He graduated in the Class of 1967 with membership in the National Junior Honor Society. Earlier this summer he graduated cum laude from Williston Academy in Easthampton, Mass., and planned to enter Occidental College in Los Angeles with the opening of the Fall semester.

Williston Academy awarded Roy a varsity athletic letter in sailing, recognition of an ability he had long before developed on the waters of the Arabian Gulf. An outdoor man as well as a scholar, he was through the years a keen camper, a Cub who grew to Star Scout rank and, perhaps above all, a water sports enthusiast. In 1967 he proved himself in sailing competition among elders when he won the trophy for the Spring Series races at Half Moon Bay, and since then the summer boating news of this paper has been replete with such items as "Returning student Roy Bolles showed the old boys a thing or two again by winning three firsts last weekend."

He returned to Arabia for this summer recess just four weeks ago at the end of a repatriation vacation trip that brought the family - Roy, his parents, and his sister Betsy - to their Dhahran home. Father and son made a major portion of the journey bachelor-style in the family's yellow Camaro, overland from Le Havre to Abadan, across the Gulf by dhow, and finally south by road from Kuwait.

Roy's scholastic distinction at his preparatory school was many faceted. He was, for example, one of seven students at his academy in an accelerated language program preparing for advanced college program placement in French. During the past term the students were heard over a nearby Springfield, Mass., station as they contributed several short segments, conversations alternately humorous and profound, to French-language radio broadcasts.

Such above-the-herd activity was typical and recalls a visitor's first meeting with Roy at the family home two years ago. Before retiring this efficient lad was observed vigorously attacking the punching bag while at the same time and in perfect cadence reciting a drill of French verbs. Making one hour serve better than two... it was the way Roy Bolles liked to do it. [Photograph]
