A Marvelwood education empowers students to become creative, resilient, mindful, and confident young adults ready to meet the challenges of higher learning, the workplace, and a rapidly-changing world. Marvelwood is a traditional and inclusive boarding school that provides support for students who need it.
Marvelwood has the flexibility to react to students' interests, and strengths in order to create exceptional learning experiences that empower and engage. This flexibility means that everyone in our community—from students to faculty to administration—can experience the freedom of thought and expression.
Our unique Learning Support programs provide the tools that help students experience academic success, increase self-confidence, and acquire strong learning and self-advocacy skills needed in college and beyond. Marvelwood offer optional Learning Support programs for a wide range of academic challenges including those related to:
The newly-refurbished Clark Center for Learning Support houses all of our support programming and tutoring.
One-on-one tutorial support for students with documented learning differences and academic weaknesses in multiple areas. Students in Strategies I meet individually with their teacher on a daily basis, focusing on academic support for content classes, preview and review of homework, use of assistive technology, and instruction/strengthening of reading, writing, organizational and study skills. Individualized support is also available for students with documented math differences.
Small-group support designed to improve and support students' overall achievement as they move toward increased academic independence.Students meet daily with a teacher in groups of no more than four, and focus on organizational and time management, metacognition and self-awareness, language and math skills, learning theories, and stress and anxiety management.
A program of daily intensive language remediation, incorporating one period of Orton-Gillingham instruction and a separate period of appropriate supplemental academic support. Instructors trained through the Kildonan Teacher Training Institute are now part of the Clark Center for Learning, employing Orton-Gillingham (OG) -- a structured, multi-sensory approach to teaching reading and writing -- to support students with language-based learning challenges.
Marvelwood’s faculty ensure that the skills students adopt within our innovative Learning Support programs are supported in the class curricula in a timely, informed and seamless manner.

The mission of the Arts Department is to empower all students to discover and foster their creativity by giving them skills and tools to develop and explore their own personal self-expression.
Marvelwood strives to create an open and encouraging artistic environment.
Our dedicated arts faculty and talented students allow us to have a supportive arts community. While attending Marvelwood, students have the option to express their talent in studio art, music, theatre, photography, and film. For four consecutive years, Marvelwood films have been selected for the National Film Festival. Our Film Studies students produced a short documentary highlighting one of the United Nations Global Initiatives and received an Award-Winning Film Production.Students also have the opportunity to take part in Theatre. Performers, stage crew, and theatre technicians work together on two productions each year. While off-campus, students are given the chance to visit local art galleries and performing art theatres.
Music is an integral part of the Marvelwood experience. More than one-third of the student body participates in the music program either via curriculum or extracurricularly, and instruction is offered at all levels of ability — from those just getting started to those with considerable experience. From jazz to chamber music, from voice to strings, there is always an attentive audience for numerous group and individual performances. Private music study is offered in selected areas as well.
Marvelwood's location, pond-side atop Skiff Mountain, inspires community, friendship, and learning. The dormitories, clustered in a semi-circle next to Lucy's Pond, are spacious and airy with large common rooms for social gathering and studying. Dorm parents supervise students in each dorm and organize activities, from game nights to baking to scavenger hunts. Each dorm, Summit, Sterling, Lake, and Star, is truly a student's home away from home, and faculty ensure a sense of home is nurtured in each dorm. Our dorms, which were fully renovated in 2018, are adjacent to Kent Land Trust acreage, and some rooms have views of the playing fields across the pond.
At Marvelwood, student activities, clubs, special trips and events are built right into the structure of the week to allow students the opportunity to share their talents and interests and to have fun with friends and faculty. Students are encouraged to contribute to planning the activity calendar by creating new clubs or proposing trips, weekend activities, games and other events that promote student interaction and entertainment.
Our students explore their passions, discover beyond their imaginations, grow beyond their expectations, and achieve their own definition of exceptional.
Discover Marvelwood and discover what inspires you.
