Aileen Stanley Flemming

Aileen Stanley Flemming, 91, of Springfield, died on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at St. John's Hospital, surrounded by her children. She was a resident of Concordia Village in independent living for over 10 years and enjoyed reading and spending time with her kids and grandkids. Aileen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill (March 18, 2009), her parents, and her brother, Robert Stanley.

Aileen was born on August 30, 1930, in Beardstown, IL, the daughter of Loran E. and Anna Grace (Quinn) Stanley and was an active member of the local community. She graduated in 1948 from Beardstown Junior High School, where she was on the Senior Honor Roll.

Aileen attended St. John's School of Nursing in Springfield, graduating as a registered nurse in 1950. She started her nursing career in Chicago, moving to the Windy City with friends from school. Aileen worked as a nurse for over 30 years, serving the Springfield community at St. John's Hospital, Memorial Medical Center (Springfield Memorial Hospital), and Urgent Care. She had a lifelong love of the nursing profession, and of the medical professionals and lifelong friends who she worked with.

Aileen married William L. Flemming (Bill) on August 26, 1957, at The Chapel of the Choir, St. Peter's Basilica, Rome, after which the newlyweds established their home-base in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, where Bill worked for the Arabian American Oil Company. Two of the couple's three children were born in Dhahran, with the middle son (Daniel) born during a vacation stateside. Aileen made sure that her family took advantage of the opportunities coming with their expatriate life in Arabia, including traveling globally, making great friends, and experiencing new cultures and customs.

After moving back to Springfield, she continued her nursing career while guiding her young family through high-school and college. Aileen was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and a St. John's volunteer.

Aileen is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth A. (Daniel) Sullivan of Commerce, MI; sons, William J. (Sung) Flemming of Sugar Hill, GA, and Daniel R. (Lynn) Flemming, of Williamsville, IL; and grandchildren, Katharine (Joseph) Saucier, Nicholas (Alyssa) Flemming, Neil Flemming, and Riley and Conor Sullivan. There were many blessings over the last two weeks of Aileen's life, but the birth of Katie and Joe's daughter, Evelynn (her first great-grandchild), was very special.
