Eleanore Winifred "Winnie" Portmess, 73, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, having led a full and vibrant life finally succumbing to her long battle with cancer and diabetes.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Md., Winnie married her husband, Robert, in 1954 and moved to Nevada and Utah, where they both worked for Kennecott Copper. In 1965, they relocated to the Middle East and after working for Aramco for 17 years, they retired to the Poconos. After the death of Robert in 1990, Winnie moved to Lake of the Woods. She moved to Syracuse, N.Y., in 2004, where she resided at the Oaks of Menorah Park.

Winnie is survived by three sons, Rob of Tully, N.Y., Michael of Spotsylvania County and Stuart of Elmhurst, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Kimberly and Jessica; two grandsons, Christopher and Park; and a much greater extended family of friends.

The family wishes to extend their sincerest appreciation to the wonderful staff from VNA, Hospice of CNY and the Francis House for their special care and love, as well as the staff at Crouse Hospital and Hematology/Oncology at Brittonfield.

Services will be private.

Donations may be made to the Francis House in her name.

We do ask that you remember Winnie for her determination to live life, which comforted others and brought much perspective and joy to our days, even in the hardest of hers.

Arrangements are with Sehl Burns Funeral Service, Syracuse, N.Y.
